  • The envelope symbols death as if you were to win the lottery in "New Hope" you would then be stoned to death by all villagers on June 27 .a
  • figurative language
  • Pack of crazy fools.
  • June 27
  • It was a quiet, peaceful and calm town where everything was much alike. Up until we found out that the town holds an assembly every June 27 where every citizen must take part in involving them to choose a envelope and if it has a black mark you were to be stoned to death.
  • Irony
  • The black box is a connection to the villagers tradition, Jackson does not approve when they bring up replacing the box. The stones are also significant as the first human tools were made of stone
  • Old Man Warner snorted. "Pack of crazy fools," he said.' This is a metaphor that talks about other villages near by who got rid of the Lottery.
  • maybe we shouldget rid of the box
  • When you think of "The Lottery" you think of money, but in "New Hope" when you speak of the lottery it means death and the people from the town are used to doing it every year they think its right for them to stone others.
