  • Management Myth: The effective manager has no regular duties to perform.
  • Team Jabulani
  • GYM
  • Hi, I'm Gary
  • Gary is the sales manager at a gym
  • His goal this month is to get as many people to buy a gym membership
  • Gary plans how to achieve his goal
  • "come join the Gym"
  • Gary hires 5 new employees to go around town & hand out fliers to spread the word of his gym
  • Because the employees are new, they don't know too much about the gym and couldn't answer a lot of questions potential customers had
  • "I am sorry"
  • Instead of people buying gym memberships, Gary received a lot of angry phone calls about how inexperienced his employees are
  • We'd like to buy memberships
  • Gary quickly realized that instead of sitting back and hiring new employees to spread the word, he should have been the one to engage in these activities
  • Potential customers would much rather hear from the sales manager who knows everything about the gym and can answer their questions
  • "It was a myth!"
  • Gary understands now that he should have regular duties to meet with customers and engage in negotiations
  • He learned that an effective manager that has no regular duties to perform is a myth
