  • French and Indian War (1754-1763)
  • Proclamation of 1763
  • The Stamp Act of 1765
  • This was a conflict between France and England for control of the Ohio Valley. England won Canada and all land west of the Mississippi River.
  • The Intolerable Acts (1773)
  • King George III issued a proclamation stating that colonists couldn't settle past the Appalachian Mountains. This was created to stabalize relations between Great Britain and Native Americans.
  • First Continental Congress
  • Because Britain was in debt after the war, the British Parliament passed an act putting a direct tax on common items. Colonists were angry because there was no colonial representation in the parliament.
  • The Declaration of Independence
  • During the Boston Tea Party, colonists destroyed loadsof tea because of the Tea Act. To punish the colonists, Britain issued the "Intolerable Acts". It included the closing of the Boston port, the ban of free town meetings, being sent back to England if committing a capital crime, and the Quartering Act.
  • Because they were so upset with the Intolerable Acts, representatives from 12 colonies were sent to the First Continental Congress. Here, they agreed on a colonial boycott of British goods and vowed to assist Massachusetts if they were attacked by Britain. Although Georgia didn't have representatives there, there were patriots in the state.
  • The purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to officially announce the colonies' independence from Britain. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, it was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
