Mercedes asked about the Counts relationship with Albert. She warned him to be careful, despite her son being a full grown adult.
The count is driven in his carriage to his new residence on Avenue des Champs Elysees. There he meets Monsieur Bertuccio.
When the Count and Bertuccio take a tour of the house, Bertuccio grows uneasy. When they reach the garden, he falls into a state of panic.
Bertuccio tells the Count the story of how, because of Villefort's cruelty to his brother, he had motivation and success in murdering him in the very spot when Villefort used to live in the house. He was in the garden to bury a newborn baby. It had the initials "A' and "H" surrounded by a crown and I took it to an orphanage. Bertuccio's sister, who he had told everything to, later got the baby again and raised it.
When I left for a smuggling expedition, I stopped at Gaspard Cadarousse's Inn to stay during a storm. I overheard him and his wife talking to a jeweler about a diamond to sell, given to them by Edmond Dantes. After arguing about the price, the diamond was sold and instead of going out in the storm he stayed. Caderousse left, but a few hours later, the jeweler and Caderousse's wife were dead, with Caderousse to blame.
After Bertuccio said his story, the Count was silent and returned to the carriage after one last walk around the garden. Bertuccio, noticing, climbed into the carriage next to the Count. They set off for Paris.
