  • "...and during this period I was busied in earnest endeavors to alleviate the melancholy of my friend. We painted and read together, or I listened... (20) This shows how the narrator is with his old friend trying to lift his spirits about death and his mental illness.
  • "At the request of Usher, I personally aided him in the arrangements for the temporary entombment. The body having been unconfined, we two alone bore it to its rest" (23). This shows the strange event of Madeline's death, and Usher's immediate reaction to bury her. This is what haunts Usher.
  • "I rushed to the chair in which he sat. His eyes were bent fixedly before him...a sickly smile quivered about his lips; and i saw that he spoke in a low, hurried, and gibbering murmer..." (29). This shows the scene of the narrator becoming agitated in the Usher home, and the return of Madeline. This scene reveals that Usher buried his sister alive in his mental state-strange events.
  • "While I gazed, this fissure rapidly widened-there came a fierce breath of the whirlwind..." (30). This shows the fall of the house of Usher, but also the fall of the family name. The narrator looks on as it collapses with both Roderick and Madeline inside.
