O'Brien enters the room and reveals that he isn't on Winston's side. He tells Winston that Winston knows he's been with the Party the whole time.
O'Brien oversees Winston's torture sessions. He tells Winston that his crime was not accepting the Party's control of history and his memory.
O'Brien increases the pain in order to get Winston to accept things that he knows aren't true.
When O'Brien begins to lessen the pain, Winston starts to love him, and even convinces himself that O'Brien isn't the source of the pain.
