Theme: One of the main themes of Annabel lee is love. Poe states, " Than to love and be loved by me" this shows that the reader and Annabel lee's relationship was based on love.
Setting: In line two the speaker states "in a kingdom by the sea", this simply shows that the speaker is living in a home by the seashore.
Speaker: The speaker was sad and sorrowful but most of all loving. The speaker states, "But our love it was stronger by far than the love of those who were older than we ". He portrayed deep passion through his expressions of the love he had for Annabel lee.
Symbol- The sea symbolizes bleakness and emptiness ("Nor the demons down under the sea") and this is important because it portrays how the narrator feels about losing his companion.
Imagery: The speaker states, " In her sepulchre there by the sea— In her tomb by the sounding sea", this portrays a visual image of Annabel lee's burial site.
Refrain: The phrase "a kingdom by the sea" is the refrain in this poem. It ties back in with the main images in the poem.
