Liesel enjoyed her life, stealing produce from nearby farmers, stealing books from the mayor's wife, going to school, and, of course, Rudy. Until one day her life was closed up, yet, from a different view, her life opened up.
A Jew arrived at the door of 33 Himmel Street. Liesel was confused and fascinated at their basement dweller. She was told that if anyone found out about him there would be serious problems.
After sometime he got very sick and Papa and Mama didn't know whether or not he would live. He lay in the cold basement, never lifting an eyelid. Everyday, Liesel would sit beside him, reading stolen books and bringing him little gifts.
One day Mama arrived at school with a scowl on her face yet with a twinkle in her eyes. She started barking words at Liesel but then her cardboard face softened and Liesel heard the words she had wanted to hear for a long time. Max had woken up! Not long after this Max had to leave, for their safety. Liesel was devastated.
One night a warning was sent out to take shelter in case of a bomb. Having grabbed a book on her way out the door to the bomb shelter, she absentmindedly started reading while everyone's minds where on their safety. People were engrossed and the time went by more swiftly afterwards.
So far, she continues to read, steal, and be with her close friend Rudy.
