While knocking on the landlords window, the Landlord's daughter greets the Highwayman.
But little to their knowledge, hiding in the dark, is Tim, the ostler. Tim is a madman, who loves the Landlord's daughter, and when he sees the highwayman talking to her ... he gets jealous when he hears what this man says next.
"Wait for me my love. For I should return midnight tomorrow. For if I have trouble tomorrow I promise to come."
The next day, a British troop came to the Inn door. They never talked to the Landlord, but drank his ale and bound his daughter. With a musket to her chest, they cackled "Take watch", facing her towards the road where the highwayman once road.
That night, on the stroke of midnight, she heard the sound of hoofs coming up the road. As she reached hesitantly near the musket she thought of one thing. The Highwayman. Bam! The Landlord's daughter killed herself to warn her love who would be captured if he came to her.
Down the road, the Highwayman heard the sound of a musket firing, spurred his horse west, towards town. When he was told the following day, that the Landlord's daughter was killed by a musket fire, the Highwayman was in rage, for she died to save him.
