In Chapter 1, we are introduced to our narrator, Melody. Melody has felt words all around her, but she is almost eleven, but she's never spoken, and she really wants to. She has cerebral palsy so she can't walk either.

In Chapter 2, Melody describes how her parents imprinted words on her, and her unique way of listening to music. She loves country music, and when the song Elvira came on, she screeched with joy.

In chapter 3, she talks about how she realized at a young age that she was a genius with an insane memory, but that she would never be able to share that. She also recalls one of her tornado explosions, where she freaks out because someone can't understand her. There was a toy in the store that should've been recalled, and Melody tried to tell her mom, but her mom thought that she wanted the toy. This didn't fly with either one of them.
