People in the South made money by purchasing slaves to work on their plantations so they can sell their cash crops.
Slaves worked hard all day and were beaten regularly. Because of Slave Codes, slave masters could recapture slaves that have escaped.
Most of the free African Americans in the south purchased their freedom only for their children to be denied the right to attend public school. It was hard for them to get jobs and they couldn't vote, serve on juries, or testify against white defendants in court.
