The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Jean-Dominique Bauby was a regular, middle aged man with two children and an ex-wife he was on good terms with. He was the author and editor of "Elle", a French magazine.
He suffered a stroke in December of 1995 while on the way to a show with his son. The stroke sent him into a coma.
When he awoke, he found that he couldn't move a single part of his body besides his left eyelid. He was "locked in." He developed a way to communicate with the doctors and nurses by blinking his left eye.
He described his condition as feeling 'trapped in a diving bell,' unable to move but still possessing full mental faculties.
Bauby used his imagination to escape his hospital room, visiting places he'd never been and living lives he'd never known.
He died of pneumonia in 1997, two years after being trapped in his own body.
