Storyboard Text

  • Winnipeg, February 1919
  • When Canadian soldiers like Harry returned home from war in 1919, they found that their jobs had been taken by women and factories had been made into munitions factories.
  • Wow, I worked so hard to defend this country and now I don't even have a job.
  • Weeks later Harry found a job in a factory making steel parts for cars.
  • It may not be the best but at least I have a job to feed my family.
  • After working for a few weeks, Harry and his friend Joe started to realize how unfair and unsafe the factory was.
  • I've worked 13 days in a row! This is totally crackers!
  • Yeah and yesterday a piece of steel fell on someone and the ambulance took them away!
  • Harry usually worked seven days a week and his son Collin started to miss him. He felt his family falling apart.
  • Dad I never see you anymore because you always come home late, I miss you so much
  • On the way home from work, Joe spoke of rumblings about a union being created in Calgary
  • Well that I'm interested in!
  • Yeah, Gary told me he heard that some labour guys were getting together in Calgary to form a union that protects us!
  • Like many families, Harry's was excited about the idea of controlled hours, better working conditions and a day off.
  • Guess what babe? The guys at work have been talking about a union being created. That means I could have a day off a week!
  • Wowza Harry that's amazing!
