  • Cities in the North experienced urbanization, when the cities rapidly grew and the population rose.
  • Economy of the South
  • This Irish immigrant living in the North is working at a mine, but other immigrants made money by mining, manufacturing and shipping.
  • Labor in the South
  • Even though the North didn't like slavery, African Americans were still discriminated against. They got the least desirable jobs because white owners preferred white workers.
  • African Americans in the South
  • No, you can't get on the boat
  • Slaves worked on plantations, which were large farms, where they grew high demand cash crops.
  • Slave codes were laws established that made it harder for slave owners to get punished for harming their slaves and made it harder for slaves to escape.
  • Free African Americans were treated very poorly, were not let into schools, they had very poor jobs, and could not serve on juries or vote.
