  • Abigail Williams
  • I want to open myself! I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus... I saw Sarah Good with the Devil...
  • Rev. Parris
  • And what shall I say to them? That my daughter and my niece I discovered dancing like heathen in the forest?
  • A very stern, respected man. However, he is hypocritical because he is having an affair with Abigail. This is probably because he has always lived a restricted lifestyle and he wants a way to break out.
  • Putnams
  • I have laid seven babies... And yet, each would whither in my arms the very night of their birth.
  • Abigail used to work for the Proctors but she was fired because of her affair with Mr. Proctor. She has very little power in society and tries hard to gain more. This is because she is a young woman, and in Puritan society, this is one of the lowest classes possible.
  • Rebecca Nurse
  • He cares more about himself than anyone else. He thinks about everything in terms of how it will affect his reputation. He is boastful about his education. This is because he wants maintain his good reputation and respected title.
  • Rev. Hale
  • The Putnam's have been very unlucky and snubbed throughout their lives. Ms. Putnam has had seven miscarriages and thinks her current kid is a witch. They may think this is because the presence of the Devil but no one knows... ambiguity. They are very bitter about the world because of their life experiences.
  • She and her family are extremely respected by her community and no one wanted to label her as a witch because everyone liked her. This is because of her family reputation and her husband. She is old and has many grandchildren. She is respectful of others and very wise.
  • A child's spirit is like a child, you can never catch it by running after it; you must stand still, and, for love, it will soon itself come back.
  • He is very serious and is never humorous. He preaches about the devil and tries to free people from the devil. People believe him because everyone is somewhat scared of the devil. This may be because he believes in the Puritan lifestyle and is against the devil.
  • We cannot look to superstition in this. The devil is precise; the marks of his presence are as definite as stone...
