  • Lee moved into Pennsylvania to gather supplies and move the war further into northern territory. He hoped to win major battles in the north to strengthen his cause.
  • Result
  • Meade, who had just been in command for three days, moved his army between Lee and Washington, D.C.
  • Major sites included farmland, a cemetery, and a peach orchard. Both sides lost a large number of soldiers over the three day battle.
  • After a Confederate defeat and heavy losses for the Union, President Lincoln held a ceremony at the Gettysburg's Soldiers National Cemetery and gave his Gettysburg Address.
