Jackson State College
James Meredith was born in 1933 and raised on a farm. Because he lived on a farm, James was sheltered from much of segregation
James' first experience with institutionalized racism was when he and his brother were forced to stand in the back of a train coming from Chicago.
James applied to and attended Jackson State College for two years before deciding to apply for a transfer to a different school.
In 1962 James applied to the segregated University of Mississippi and got accepted!
But when the registrar found out that James was black he took away James' acceptance.
