  • Monsieur and Madame Loisel were a poor couple living in Paris. Madame Loisel was always sad, as she had no jewelry to pride herself in.
  • Exposition
  • One day, Monsieur Loisel received an invitation to a formal party that was being hosted by his boss. Madame Loisel became very sad, because she new she had nothing to wear.
  • Conflict
  • To solve this issue, Monsieur Loisel gave his wife money to buy a new evening dress. Also, Madame Loisel borrowed a diamond necklace from her friend, Madame Forestier, to have a piece of jewelry to wear.
  • Rising Action
  • Madame Loisel had a great time at the party. But when they got back to their house, a big problem rose. The diamond necklace was gone!
  • Climax
  • Monsieur Loisel retraced their steps to try to find the necklace, but he came up empty. They then resorted to buying an exact copy of the necklace, costing them 36,000 francs, gathered by taking out loans.
  • Falling Action
  • Ten years passed, and Monsieur and Madame Loisel had just paid off the last of their loans, but they had to give up most of their few luxuries to do so. One day, when Madame Loisel ran into Madame Forestier, the latter broke the news to her that her lost diamond necklace was fake!
  • Resolution
