- Nick hoped to write for a living, but as he didn't pursue writing for the college newspaper while in school, he doesn't believe that he would have a chance obtaining a writing career.
- Hello, what would you like to trade with our company today?
- Nick knows that he needs to do something with his life and enrolls in the teacher's college. Through his twenties, Nick falls into a depression and in his twenties, he goes to see a psychiatrist because he's frustrated that he can not find a job he wants to do.

- Arsenal beat Tottenham in the Littlewoods Cup semifinal in 1987. This victory lifts Nick Hornby out of his last few years of depression.
- Nick gets a job with a trading company, this is a real confidence booster for him. Nick buys a season ticket at Arsenal for the seated area in 1989. He feels that doing all this is a sign of growing up and gives him confidence.
- Nick starts to play football with his friends on a regular basis giving him enjoyment and taking him further away from his previous cycle of depression. As he goes to Arsenal games as an adult, he feels like he has completed everything you can do.
