Storyboard Text

  • Racism- People at Scout's school is saying Atticus is a n*****- lover and Scout asks if it's true.
  • You aren't really a n*****-lover, then, are you?
  • I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put, sometimes—baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you.
  • Racism- Scout and Jem experience racism when they go to Calpurnia's church.
  • You ain't got no business bringin' white chillun here—they got their church, we got our'n. It is our church, ain't it, Miss Cal?
  • Racism- Atticus explains to the courtroom that it's obvious there's discrimination towards blacks.
  • There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads—they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life.
  • Sexism- Miss Maudie tells Scout to wear a dress because she's a lady.
  • Jean Louise, you are a lady and have to wear a dress, not overalls!
  • But I wanna!
  • Sexism- Jem tells Scout to stop being a girl because she's scared.
  • But Jem I'm scared..
  • Scout I'm tellin' you for the last time, shut your trap or go home- I declare to the Lord you're gettin'more like a girl everyday!
  • For one thing, Miss Muadie can't serve on the jury because she's a woman.
  • Sexism- Atticus explains to Jem that Miss Maudie can't be on the jury because she's a woman.
  • Why don't people like us and Miss Maudie ever sit on juries?
