  • A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still.
  • In the scene where the blind man's dog led his owner away from Scrooge, it implies that Scrooge was such a mean person that even a dog knew not to go near him.
  • Theme
  • These are the chains I carry in the afterlife.
  • After Scrooge relived his past with the ghost of Christmas Past, Scrooge is upset and frustrated so he tries to extinguish the light coming from the ghost's head. He cannot get rid of the light which symbolizes that he cannot change his past.
  • Symbolism
  • They are man's, this boy is Ignorance, and this girl is Want
  • When Scrooge was a kid, he was very lonely and didn't have many friends. Since Scrooge didn't have many friends when he was a kid, and often spent his time alone, and he was sad because of this, leading Scrooge to not be kind to and to not care about other people.
  • Indirect Characterization
  • I believe that is is necessary for us to part.
  • When Marley's ghost came to see Scrooge, he showed Scrooge the chains that he now carries around in the after life. He is trying to tell Scrooge of the effects of the choices you make now in life.
  • When the Ghost of Christmas Present showed Scrooge the two children, they symbolized the bad traits of society. The girl represents Want and the boy represents Ignorance. These are both society's actions, something that we should beware and be cautious of.
  • Scrooge hoards the coals and doesn't let his clerk have any. The clerk is only allowed to have a few coals. The fact that Scrooge won't give any coals to his clerk shows that Scrooge is greedy and cruel.
