"Mme. Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds."
Della and Jim live in run down flat, making only 20 dollars a week. Della, described as Mrs. James Dillingham Young longs to buy a gift worthy enough for her husband.
Della realizes she only has $1.87 to buy a gift for Jim, which is not enough to get her husband something good.
Della decides to cut her precious long tresses and sell them to get money to buy a gift worthy of Jim. Madame gives her 20$ for her hair.
Jim comes back from a long day of work to see Della's newly cut hair. He stands there in shock.
Della had cut and sold her hair to buy Jim a watch chain, who had sold his watch to buy her the expensive combs that she had always wanted.
They sacrificed their most beloved possessions to buy each other nice gifts. That is the gift of Christmas, this is the gift of the Magi.
