Point of View
The story is told from a limited third person perspective. "One day that Tom Walker had been to a distant part of the neighborhood, he took what he considered a short-cut homeward, through the swamp." The story is centered around Tom Walker but is not from his point of view.
The story is set just outside of Boston, Massachusetts in the year of 1727. "A few miles from Boston, in Massachusetts, there is a deep inlet winding several miles into the interior of the country from Charles Bay, and terminating in a thickly wooded swamp or morass." The two pivotal locations within the story are the home of Mr. Tom Walker and the forest near his home where he meets the devil.
The theme of the story is that of morality and making sure that the choices you make are truly the ones that you want in life. Tom becomes rich and well known but at the cost of selling his soul. later on we learn that he regrets this decision and becomes a church-goer in attempts to escape The Devil
