In 1916 the Easter rising happened. It was launched by Irish republicans to end the rule of Britain, and to establish the Irish republic. 1,600 followers formed a rebellion and barricaded themselves in buildings in Dublin, for 6 days until the British got them out. The leaders of the rebellion were executed, and more than 2000 people were dead or injured by the end of the week. The executed leaders were hailed as martyrs(a person who is killed because of their religious or other beliefs) by the public.
