This was the first complaint. The Israelites questioned Moses where they would find water to drink.
In response to this, Moses then took them Elim, where there were 12 springs of water, and 70 palm trees. It was here they rested for a while.
When they left Elim, they came to the Wilderness of Sin. On the 15th day of the second month after they left Egypt, the Egyptians began to complain about the lack of food.
Then the Lord told Moses that he would rain bread from the heavens each day, and that they should only go and collect the amount they need for that day.
The Israelites then entered the Desert of Sin, and travelled from place to place as God commanded. However they soon ran out of water, so they quarreled Moses as to where they could find water.
In response to this, Moses asked God where he could find water for the Israelites to drink. He said to strike the Rock at Horeb, of which water will flow out of for them to drink. He then called this
