It banned slavery in the United States
This amendment affected millions of former slaves in the South
Forced slavery, except as punishment for a crime, will not be allowed in the United States or any place under their authority
Lives would be changed forever as slaves went from property...
...to free men, women, and children who could now build their own life in America.
This amendment was signed by President Abraham Lincoln in February of 1865, and was the first step to the equality we have today.
