The first battle was fought in the Philipines where Teddy Roosevelt had cabled secret orders to commodore George Dewey and eventually the first shot was taken before war was officially declared.
In the war's most famous battle (held in Cuba) US troops aimed to capture territory above santiago. Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt resigned from his naval post and led a unit of 1,000 soldiers (mainly College Athletes) into victory. they became known as the "Rough Riders"
The Spaniards were finally defeated in Puerto Rico. They surrendered to the US troops after about 500 casualties.
After the War the Philipines no longer had to be under the Spanish rule.
The United States of America took over control of the Philipines after the victory of the Spanish-American war.
The Philipines were also granted their independence.
