  • Oedipus showed many characteristics of being overly curios and his main goal was to find the truth. Once he found the truth that laid within the prophecy, he gouged his eyes and it was then when reached his downfall.
  • Anagnorisis
  • You're really his mother, Jocasta.
  • Oedipus proved to have an overwhelming sense of confidence when introducing himself in the first pages of the play, saying how everyone already knew who he was. This shows him having excessive pride in himself.
  • Nemesis
  • Oedipus goes from being a hero in Thebes who is trusted to save the city, to someone who has partaken in incest and killed his real father. Creon takes over and Oedipus loses everything, causing a big change in events.
  • Catharsis
  • The shepherd tells Oedipus that Jocasta gave him up as a baby to protect her husband from the prophecy. This reveals that he is married to his mom, which is a moment of critical discovery.
  • Oedipus killed his father and fulfilled the prophecy of killing his biological father. This was an evil act to commit, so him finding out he married was mom was retribution for his evil actions.
  • The audience feels a sense of catharsis when Oedipus' whole world comes crashing down. He loses his wife, family, sight and leadership over Thebes, leaving the readers with only feelings of pity.
