After being nearly struck by lightning, Martin Luther vowed to be a monk out of fear for his life. He tried to follow the Church, but was afraid an angry God would punish him.
Luther's idea that people could be saved if they had faith in Christ led to problems with the Catholic Church.
We will go against Luther and win the Church's power back!
The conflicts began in Wittenberg, Germany. This is when church officials were selling indulgences to finance St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome.
Luther posted all his disputes with the Church in his Ninety-Five Theses. These included the Bible is not the only source of religious truth: people don't need the clergy to interpret the Bible: Salvation can be gained only through faith in Christ.
In 1529, German Princes who stayed loyal to the Church agreed to unite against Luther and his ideas. This was the Reformation.
The princes who supported Luther signed a protest against the agreement and earned the Protestants for them.
