Thomas Sr. and the letters he writes
Oskar and the key
The nothing spaces
Thomas's letters represent the feelings he was never able to express when he was with Grandma. He is stuck in the past and has a hard time living in the future.
The key represents the grief that Oskar carries around from his father's death. It is his purpose in a way after his dad dies because it helps him to deal with his grief.
The nothing spaces represent the holes in Grandma and Thomas's relationship that they are not able to overcome. They both have a hard time expressing their feelings and thoughts for one another so they make places they can be alone without the other.
