Storyboard Text

  • FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW
  • I am a slave who has run away from my master. I need to stay hidden from slave catchers!
  • In 1850...
  • But if we allow them to become a state, it will end the balance between the north and the south!
  • California, our 31st state has applied for their statehood as a free state.
  • But this made slave owners in the South unhappy...
  • If the Northerners are getting another state, the South should too!
  • Therefore, the Compromise of 1850 occurred...
  • Everyone, including those living in free states will have to enforce the capture and return of runaway slaves?!
  • And in order to maintain balance in the country, The Fugitive Slave Law will be passed.
  • But abolitionists were not happy...
  • The Slave Hunter is among us! Be on your guard! An arrest is planned for tonight!
  • Abolitionists did their best to warn fugitives when they could by posting warnings in cities.
  • People began to hunt down runaways in free states in order to return them...
  • This caused a lot of tension...
  • The Fugitive Slave Law became a cause of the American Civil War. It caused both the North and the South to be upset, eventually leading to the Confederate succession.
  • There should be another slave state added!
  • Slaves should not be hunted in the free states!
