In the book, it said that mail was censored by wives of guards on Alcatraz.
According to the the Author's Notes, on page 217, it said that many families lived on Alcatraz and "some children live their entire childhood on Alcatraz."
According to the Author's Notes on page 218, it stated, "Prison guards were not highly paid."
According to the Author's Notes on page 222, "The convicts' mail was routinely censored and wives of the guards occasionally asked to help out with this task."
