  • Eastern Woodlands
  • Did you know that the Mowhawk of the Eastern Woodlands Region lived in longhouses that were 200 feet long?
  • What were they made out of?
  • They bent long poles and covered them with tree bark. Fire pits ran down the middle of the longhouse for warmth and cooking.
  • Wow! Good thing there are smoke holes at the top.
  • Great Plains
  • This buffalo skin tee-pee was a home to the people of the Great Plains.
  • This tee-pee would be easy to relocate as they followed the buffalo.
  • Pacific Northwest
  • Did you know that totem poles were unique to the people of the Pacific Northwest?
  • Yes! And they had ceremonial feasts called Potlatches where they gave away possessions.
  • Males of the Pacific Northwest used spears to hunt whales, salmon, and sea otters.
  • Whale blubber was not only eaten, but also made into oil.
  • Yikes!
  • Desert Southwest
  • Check out these apartment-style dwellings made of adobe built by people of the Desert Southwest.
  • They also developed many technologies to survive harsh conditions, like irrigation for crops!
