  • We meet the main characters: George and Lennie. We follow them into a clearing with a lake. There they camp for the night.
  • Lennie, for God' sakes don't drink so much.'
  • Before and throughout dinner, George and Lennie have an conversation about the future but have an argument ,as well, about a dead mouse Lennie finds on the side of the road.
  • 'I wish't we'd get the rabbits pretty soon, George. They ain't so little.'
  • George and Lennie arrive at the ranch and meet Candy, a handless, old man who works on the ranch. He welcomes them and they talk about the ranch until the boss comes.
  • 'He was sure burned when you wasn't here this morning.'

  • The boss arrives, Candy leaves and the boss confronts them about why they weren't there when they were supposed to be and why Lennie wouldn't speak for himself. He then leaves.

  • George scolds Lennie for speaking out of turn but gets interrupted by a swamper standing outside the door with an old dog. They talk until Curly comes looking for his Father but Curly almost starts a fight with Lennie.
  • 'By Christ, he's gotta talk when he's spoke to. What the hell are you gettin' into it for?'
  • Curly walks out and the swamper explains that Curly has always been a scrapper. The swamper then walks out . After a few minuter, Curly's wife come looking for him and acts flirtatiously towards George and Lennie.
  • 'Nobody can blame a person for lookin'"
