  • Giovanni preps himself in the mirror before his exciting meeting with Beatrice. A spider crawls across his mirror, and Giovanni blows it away. In effect, the spider drops to the ground-- lifeless.
  • Giovanni witnesses Doctor Giacomo Rappacini, a peculiar, tall, and sickly man, working in the opulent garden outside his window.
  • Giovanni finds himself madly in love with the beautiful Beatrice. Ignoring Baglioni's remarks, he buys Beatrice a bouquet of flowers. Giovanni spots Beatrice smelling the purple flower. As she picks up the flower, a dew drop falls and immediately kills a lizard underneath.
  • Horrified Giovanni runs to Beatrice and accuses her of poisoning him. She denies, and she takes the vial's anecdote to prove so.
