Dr. Sacks brings Jimmie's attention to kids playing baseball outside and leaves the room. Jimmie calms down.
When Dr. Sacks returns, Jimmie forgets that the two men ever met. Dr. Sacks eventually speaks with Jimmie's estranged brother and learns of his alcoholism.
Hi Doc, nice to meet you!
Dr. Sacks finds that Jimmie suffers from Korsakoff Syndrome. After leaving the Navy in the 1960's, Jimmie turned to drinking. He became estranged from his family, suffered liver damage and in 1975, after his alcoholism worsened, fell victim to severe memory loss. He lives as though he is still a 19 year-old boy. His alcoholism has caused him to have suffer from a thiamine (vitamin B) deficiency.
