Lizabeth, Joey and other children head over to Ms. Lottie's house, to taunt her and her son. In acts of childishness, the kids throw rocks at Ms. Lottie and her son.
After hearing her parents fight at night, Lizabeth takes her brother with her to Ms. Lottie's. In an act of anger, Lizabeth sobs as she rips out Ms. Lottie's precious marigolds.
Lizabeth realizes her childish behavior and her understanding of Ms. Lottie grows, and she now feels more like a woman. She realized that she made a mistake and misinterpreted Ms. Lottie's character.
