Buck is a St. Bernard/Scott Shepard mix who lives in the sun kissed Santa Clara, California. He lives with 2 other doges his owner Judge Miller and his two boys. Yet during this time a gold rush was going on in Alaska and big dogs were wanted for transportation and cargo hauls. But little did Buck know that this gold rush would change his life.
That night Buck was out in the yard of Judge Millers, when Manuel (the gardener) are gambler who had a large debt came in with a rope. Buck trusted Manuel so he let Manuel put a rope around his neck. Then, Manuel passed the rope to a complete stranger and Buck began to growl, Manuel then said, "Twist it and you'll choke him plenty." The stranger then took Buck away and that was the last he had seen Judge Miller's house.
Buck was then thrown onto a train into the baggage car with two different men. The next Buck knew it was the next day and his tong and throat severely hurt. Than one of the men reached after Buck but Buck decided to fight back and bit the man's hand and didn't let go until he choked Buck. Later the man took the rope off Buck but threw him into a cage like box. Finally, another man came in and said that Buck was worth $150, the next day 4 men took the crate and threw Buck onto another train.
Buck was put into an express car but definitely not treated how he was used too. The locomotive screeched and for two days he didn't receive any food or water. He didn't mind the hunger but the thirst made his throat hurt even more than before and to add onto that he began to get a fever. To make things even worse every time express messengers walked by they tormented Buck and Buck would go to the bars of his cage but he couldn't do anything.
Finally they had arrived to Seattle and the express messengers looked happy too. Then four men again grabbed Buck's cage and put in into a wagon. He then was put off the wagon and put into a high walled backyard with a man who was wearing a red sweater with a club. The four men ran upon the fence and watched as the man in the red sweater beat him with the club. He told Buck he must behave if he doesn't want a beating again so Buck did exactly that.
Then after his beating a man named Perrault came into the yard and bought Buck from the man in the red sweater. Perrault took Buck and a dog named Curly and that was the last Buck saw of the man in the red sweater. Buck was put on the deck of the Narwhal, and once the ship left it would be the last he would see the warm south. Buck and Curly were brought below deck to where two other dogs. Finally, the Narwhal had stopped moving and Buck got off the ship and saw his fist snow, and he was now in Alaska
