  • Theodore Roosevelt unexpectedly became the 26th president of the United States in September 1901, after the assassination of William McKinley.
  • Scared
  • Roosevelt was elected back into office in 1904.

  • On May 6, 1898, Theodore Roosevelt resigned his post as Assistant Secretary of the Navy and volunteered to head a cavalry unit destined to fight in Cuba against Spain in the Spanish-American War.

  • While campaigning in Milwaukee, Roosevelt was shot in the chest by a fanatic, but soon recovered.
  • In November 1906, Roosevelt made presidential history by becoming the first chief executive to leave the United States. He sailed aboard USS Louisiana to personally inspect the construction of the Panama Canal, a project that he had championed as president.
  • He was only 42 years old when he took office, he was the youngest president in the nation’s history, and his youth and vigor immediately transformed the public image of the presidency.
