  • A simile is a comparison using the words like or as. One of the similes used in The Raven by Edgar Poe is Suddenly there came a tapping as of someone gently rapping.
  • Tone
  • A metaphor is a comparison without using the words like or as. A metaphor in The Raven consists of dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
  • Theme
  • Personification is giving human-like qualities to unhuman-like creatures. The raven saying "Nevermore" is personification because ravens can't really talk.
  • Conotation
  • Tone is what the author wants you to feel. Some of the words that made us determine the tone as depressing is dreary, weak and weary, pondered, and bleak.
