Father, can I please have my share of the property now?
*Sighs* Okay son
Here, let me buy you another drink!
My father's servants have plenty to eat but here I am having to eat the pig's food! I will go back home and let father make me one of his servant's.
Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.
Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!
My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.
The message of this story is that God is always willing to forgive us and will always love us no matter what. It shows us God's generosity and love and someone turning back to God for forgiveness. It also shows the resentment some "good" people can have towards others who behave badly. The younger son in the story represents the lost (tax collectors and sinners), and the father represents God.
