  • On one dreadful morning, seven NASA specialists/astronauts met a horrendous demise. They were part of the NASA space mission named “Challenger”.
  • On January 26, 1986, the Challenger space shuttle launched. Due to overnight frosting and icing, the gasses in each tank froze and began to mix when they were heated.
  • The Challenger space shuttle exploded just 73 seconds into its launch because gases in the external fuel tank mixed, exploded, and tore the space shuttle apart.
  • Lt. Col Francis Richard Scobee enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from high school in 1957. He served as an engine mechanic and earned a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Arizona in 1965 and an officer’s commission. 
  • Dr. Ronald Ervin McNair achieved a Ph.D. in physics from MIT in 1976. He was the second African American to fly in space.
  • Christa McAuliffe was a teacher. She was to be the first teacher to be sent to space as selected by the Teacher in Space program.
