Hey dad I have a geography project about immigration I want to know more about how you came to Canada. I know I'm a first generation citizen because I was born here.
Excellent question son. As you already know, we are Vietnamese and your mother and I have immigrated to Canada from Vietnam many years ago.
Vietnam was a beautiful place. We lived there peacefully until the Vietnam war initially started in 1955 and lasted all the way until 1975. I lived in a small village while your mother lived in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City.)
Many people died in the war and many lost their families and homes. The Northern Vietnamese forces overwhelmed the American and Southern Vietnamese forces.
The war was one of the main reasons we had to leave. But after the new government was formed it got worse. Poverty and disease became rampant and the government was oppressive. They took many of our belongings and placed those against the government were placed into reeducation camps where they were tortured. Many people like me and your mother had to leave because of these factors.
We soon immigrated to Canada around the 1980's with our families. Canada provided many more advantages than Vietnam, such as Education, job opportunities, safety, and its Universal Health care system.
