Pecola Breedlove, a young neglected child was sent to live with the MacTeer family. The two MacTeer sisters, Frieda and Claudia were uneasy at first, but soon grow to become best friends with Pecola.
Pecola has grown up never feeling loved and burden by the disadvantages brought on her by circumstances out of her control. She idolized white girls like Shirley Temple. She thought if only she could be like them, her life would be better.
Pecola's home circumstances were horrible. She was over looked, neglected, and abused. She was raped by her father Cholly and abused by her mother when she told her. Pecola's innocence was ruined and she longed for a better life.
Pecola finds out that she is pregnant. She seeks comfort in her friends, who encourage her during this hard time. They plant flower in hopes that the baby will live.
Unfortunately despite the hopes of her friends, Pecola's baby dies. She endures abuse at her home until her father runs away. The stress Pecola has indured at such a young age has made her crazy.
Pecola's craziness leads to her belief that she has a friend that only sh can see. This friend is beautiful and everything Pecola has always dreamed
