  • The reader is introduced to Kafka Tamura, a 15 year old boy who is running away from his home, Nagano Ward in Japan, on his birthday.
  • Rising Action (2)
  • The reader is then introduced to the second main character, Nakata, an old man who can talk to cats. He speaks with Kawamura and Mimi to look for the cat Goma.
  • Climax/Falling Action/Resolution (1)
  • Kafka has run away to Takamatsu and has been invited by Miss Saeki and Oshima to stay at the Komura Memorial Library.
  • Climax/Falling Action/Resolution (2)
  • Nakata is forced to kill Johnny Walker because Johnny has been severing cats' heads to reap their souls to make his magic flute. Kawamura is killed, but Mimi and Goma are saved.
  • After falling in love with Miss Saeki, Kafka must hide from the police after being accused of killing his father. In the woods, he finds a place between death and life and meets young Miss Saeki. He leaves to return to the real world now that he is ready to return home.
  • Nakata has performed many feats and miracles around Japan with his driver, Hoshino. He made fish and leeches rain from the sky and opened up the entrance to limbo with the entrance stone. After fulfilling his duty of opening it up, it allowed both Miss Saeki and him to pass on to the afterlife. They could finally now rest in peace.
