Storyboard Text

  • Pay for continental soldiers at the end of war.
  • Here is your long term credit. This is money certificate you can use in the future.
  • Massachusetts debt
  • Were going to have to foreclose your farm for your debts.
  • August 29th in North Hampton
  • The continental soldiers were paid by long term credit and paper certificates. It resulted in the government making real currency. I agree with them doing this because some people need the money then.
  • September 25th-28th
  • The legislature raised war taxes and required them to be paid in hard money. Many farmers had morgaged land and didn't have the money to pay the taxes. They were shocked because they didn't have the money to pay off their debt and their farms got foreclosed.
  • Shay's new plan
  • On August 29th an armed group of farmers closed the Hampshire County court of Common Pleas in Northampton bringing all foreclosures to a halt. What led to this was their petitions were ignored to lower taxes.
  • The editer of the Massachusets Centinel's observation
  • Shays own band of 600 farmers occupied the Springfield courthouse and prevented the Supreme Judicial Court from sitting there. The results from this were that many officials were shocked then, in Boston general Benjamin Lincoln got 4,400 troops to protect the courts.
  • They would mount a suprise attack and overrun the new federal arsenal at Springfield. They made this plan because they knew they were facing an organized militia. The result of this was the farmers retreating in disarray.
  • He observed that late insurrections in the commonwealth must be considered as the cause of bringing federal government into existance. This means that the rebellion showed they needed a new government. I agree because they did need a new government or there would be more rebellions.
