Git! Stay away from my marigolds!
Lizbeth was teaching the younger kids how to use a small stone to behead a marigold in Miss Lottie's garden. Lizbeth feels slightly immature and out of place, because she should act like a proper lady.
Out of anger, Lizbeth climbs out of her window and runs to Miss Lottie's house. She rips out each and every one of the marigolds before Miss Lottie discovers what has been done.
Miss Lottie comes out, not angry, but truly hurt. Suddenly, Lizbeth understands that her actions have affected someone other than herself on a deeper level. She decides that this foolish choice was her last act of childhood.
