One characteristic of Mattie is that she is caring. She takes care of a homeless girl, Nell, who she found on the streets. She also helps Eliza take care of the twins when they get yellow fever. She also takes care of her grandfather as he is dying.
Mattie is loyal. She offers a partnership in the coffeehouse to Eliza, took care of her mom when she was sick and she takes on ownership of the family business when people told her to sell it.
Mattie is also brave. She confronts the thieves during the robbery of the coffeehouse that ends with her grandfather killed. She later becomes the owner of the coffeehouse when her mother is nowhere to be found.
