Every day thousands of ordinary people flee their country due to war, persecution, political reasons or other threats. They are looking for safety, respect and freedom. They will walk for many days, weeks and even months crossing borders In the extreme heat of the day.
Many of them then get on unseaworthy boats and attempt to make the dangerous journey to a safe country. The boats are over crowded with not much food and fresh water on board. The Asylum seekers have no privacy, comfort or safety.
If the boat and people survive the trip they are most likely to be picked up by a bigger vessel and taken ashore.
When they arrive in a country, just say Australia the Asylum seekers are taken to be assessed and see if they classify as a 'Refugee'. A refugee is a person who, because of war, persecution or other threats are forced to flee their home country too look for safety and freedom. If the Asylum seekers do no classify as a refugee they are sent back to were they came from.
The Refugees are then taken to a detention centre because all "unlawful non-citizens” (that is, people who are not Australian citizens and do not have permission to be in the country) have to be detained regardless of their situation. The Refugees can be kept in detention centres for many years and cant leave until they have a visa or leave the country.
If Jesus walked in to Australia know he would be shocked and upset at the way Refugees are kept in Australia. He would tell everyone that 'Everyone has a right to be free and safe, these people should be welcomed in to our communities and given opportunities for the children to go to school, the adults to work and earn money to help rebuild their lives.'
