Mr. Heck Tate's Testimony
Bob Ewell's Testimony
Mr Heck Tate said he was leaving his office on November 21st when Bob Ewell came in and said a black guy had raped his girl. He went over there quickly and found her on the ground, beat up. She said she was fine but Tom Robinson had raped her. Mr. Heck Tate went and got Tom, asked Bob Ewell's daughter if she could identify him. She did and Mr Heck Tate took him in. Atticus asked him what injuries she had intensely. Gem started to grin widely and said something about corroborating evidence.
Tom Robinson's Testimony
The night of November 21st I was coming in from the woods with my kill and I heard Mayella screaming like a hog stuck in a house. I dropped my kill, ran to the door, and saw Tom Robinson on top of my Mayella. (Stands up and points at Tom) Atticus requests that all of the women and children are sent home. Atticus asked Bob Ewell if he could write, then if he would right his name. He wrote his name with left hand and Mayella was beat on the right side of her face.
Mayella said that she was on the front porch the night of November 21st. Bob told her to chop up the chiffarobe but she wasn't feeling strong enough. Then Tom Robinson was walking by and she said shed give him a nickel if he chopped up the chiffarobe for her. She went inside to get the nickle, and turned around to see Tom. He jumped ontop of her and hit her repeatedly. Then he chunked, choked, and took advantage of her. The hollered and kicked until she saw Bob above her asking who did it. Atticus asked her how many how long she'd been in school. She said three years. Atticus asked her if her dad ever beat her. She said no, but nodded when he asked if he treated her poorly when he drank. Atticus asked her if she had requested jobs from Tom before. She said yes. Tom's right arm is crippled from an accident when working as a kid. Atticus poured out questions onto Mayella until she cried and refused to answer any more questions.
Atticus asks Tom questions to show that he has nothing to hide. Tom said he passes by the Ewell house when he goes to and from picking cotton. Tom said that Mayella asked him to chop up a chiffirobe during the spring. He only had a hoe so she gave him a hatchet. He chopped it up and refused the nickle. Then he home. Tom said he did a small job for her every time he went by the house and he could tell she didn't get any other help. He did these things for free. On the 21st Tom was going home and Mayella told him to come help her for a minute, but she was really quite. She told him to come inside and that the kids were out getting ice cream. Tom was eying up the broken door, and asked if she had a screwdriver. Tom sat in the chair Mayella pointed to and she grabbed his legs. Tom tripped over the chair, startled, and when he turned around she hugged him around the waist. Then Mayella kissed him, said she had never kissed a grown man before besides her papa, and told Tom to kiss her back. Tom tried to get out but Mayella blocked the door. Tom had to push her to get out and then Bob showed up and said " God damn it whore, i'll kill ya." Tom ran away because any black man who hits a white woman wouldn't live long. Mr. Link Deas rose and said Tom hadn't been trouble in the eight years he worked for him. Mr. Gilmer tries to intimidate Tom and tries to find which side of the story was true. Jem makes Dill take Scout outside and Dill starts to sob uncontrollably. Dill can't stand how Mr. Gilmer is treating Tom.
Dolphus Raymond comes over and offeres Dill some soda. Then he tells them that he pretends to be drunk so people won't focus on him being with black people. Scout and Dill return to hear Atticus's statements. Atticus tells everyone that no medical evidence was given to prove Tom raped Mayella so the case shouldn't have gone to court. The defendant is not guilty but someone in the courtroom is. I can not pity her because she is white and knows the codes. She tempted a black man and tried to put him away. Every man is equal and every court has its faults. What you see here today is a white woman and a black man with only his right hand useful. Please return this man to his family. In the name of god, believe him.
Scout, Jem and Dill were told to go home after Calpurnia found them on the balcony. When they got home, Aunt Alexandra nearly fainted after finding out where they had been until they said Atticus told them to com back after dinner. After a dinner full of Calpurnias disappointment in them, they returned to the court house. Judje Taylor was napping, Atticus was pacing the court room, Mr. Gilmer was talking to the reporter, and Reverend skyes was waiting silently like everyone else in the room. The jury returned, handed thier verdict to the judge and sat down.
